Community Change Makers- Emily Lamb, Pilates for a Purpose

March 1, 2017

Our Wynnum-Manly Bayside community is overflowing with inspirational women in business, and we are pooling together to celebrate and inspire International Women's Day and support BOLD change in our community.

I first made contact with Emily just last year. A good friend and old work colleague recommended her knowing that I was searching for an exceptional team of referrals for my clients, and as a client of Emily's she came highly recommended.

As part of my treatments, I generally send people home with basic homework stretches, and bring awareness to their postural concerns, going by what their body tells me. I am a strong believer that YOU as a person must be responsible for your own body and MAKE the time to care for it if you expect it to go the distance. And we each only get one body. Almost every client I have I recommend yoga or pilates as a component of their body maintenance that can take them so much further in their body health if they team up their massage treatments with regular classes teaching their mind and body about posture and strength and space.  Obviously then, it is very important to me to have people I can refer them to, that I can trust to help them on this journey.

After meeting Emily I was confident that I had found my local Wynnum-Manly recommended referral for pilates. Emily takes her classes and her clients seriously and has converted her entire downstairs home into a spacious studio full of natural lighting and warmth.   What's more, Emily's ethos to her work and life is an inspiration of its own.

When the seed was first planted to do something special for International Women's Day, Emily came almost instantly to mind. On presenting the idea to her, she immediately jumped on board, a woman clearly about community and each of us doing our bit to make an impact on our own little part of the world.  She has been a wealth of support and guidance since.

Please read on to see what Emily has to say:

Tell us a little bit about who you are, and who is your business.

I am a wife, mummy and business owner.  I own a Pilates/Barre studio in Wynnum/Manly called Pilates for a Purpose ( P 4 P ).

Our mission statement is;

develop strength | build awareness | inspire purpose | fund impact

What made you choose this path?  Was it always in the plans for you or something you kind of fell into?

I started doing Pilates when I was 12 years old and haven’t stopped since and I definitely loved the idea of working for myself from an early age so it really was in the plans.

This years theme is Be Bold For Change. What was your bold moment that convinced you to take the plunge and trust in yourself?

I was lying in bed one night and my head was full of ideas.  I knew I didn’t want to stay in the corporate world and I wanted to have more freedom.  No sleep was achieved that night! I decided I would quit my job (right before my wedding) go back to studying and take it from there … no regrets at all!

Making a change and plunging into the unknown can be really daunting. Terrifying even. How did you do it? Both practically, and emotionally?

I had faith that this was the right thing.  I was not settled where I was and the ideas I was coming up with gave me a lot of peace.  I talked it through lots with people I respected and trusted.

What motivated you to make the change?

I wanted to impact the world and I felt working for myself would give me the freedom to get creative and just go for it.

You are a mother too. There is no doubt that the 2 roles of business and family overlap. What came 1st? The kids, or the business?

I started this before I had my daughter, I just didn’t build it up too much until after she was born.  So I got the study done and a rough idea of the business first.

What difference do you think you have made to your life by choosing this path?

I am fortunate because I work from home which means I can be cooking dinner one minute and walking down the stairs to teach a class the next.  I can also  (to a point) pick my work hours based around life.  It has very much provided an effective work/life balance.

What difference do you think you have/can make to others?

I hope a massive difference.  I got into Pilates because of chronic back and jaw pain and it has made a huge difference to the way I can live.  I love being able to do this for other people.

Being able to increase the difference by impacting the world gives it a great new level too.  (Ask Emily more about this this Wednesday at our Be BOLD for Change morning. You'll be awed  at what an impact one person can do if they put their mind to it.  I promise)

How can others learn from your story?  What message do you have for them?

Know your ‘Why’ and have a deep purpose for what you are doing.  Things go wrong and you can have really bad days but having a why and purpose gives you the strength and motivation to move forward and get creative.

Mine is - I want to bless my clients with a method I believe in and help fund the rescue of lots of girls from the sex trade - having the motivation of impact is a good drive for me.

Make your reasons the foundation and core of what you do.

Is there anything else you would like to share with us today?

One of my favourite quotes.

"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world." Anne Frank

Use your skills and talents to help improve the world.  Get creative with how that looks.  Each of us has individual passions and motivators so don’t be afraid to think outside the square and bring something different to the table.

This event is a great example – lots of different, beautiful individuals who have created something they feel can impact their little part of the world – this has a surprisingly good ripple effect.

Emily is kindly donating a voucher for two pilates mat and Barre classes to our raffle on the day. What a perfect way to try her out for nothing. Don't forget, if you bring along a new packet of nickers to donate on the day (we'll explain that later), you'll get a free ticket in the draw.
